Limitations of Being Alone

Life lesson: Be safe.
Ladder in garden

My friend, who is visiting from out of state, wanted to know if there was anything she could help me with around the house.

We had been visiting places for the past two days and figured a day around the house would give us a chance to recoup and rest.

One-by-one, my garage door automatic lights had bit the dust. There was no light when the garage door opened or when anyone went into the garage from the house.

This was a small chore. What made it a major chore was the necessity for a ladder to get the job done.

I do not get on a ladder anymore, at least not unless someone is standing immediately by my side. Considering I have some mobility issues, that just doesn’t seem safe anymore.

Not being able to get on a ladder greatly curtails house functions and maintenance details, such as the following:

  • Washing some windows.

  • Putting things on top shelves in closets and cupboards.

  • Placing items into all sorts of storage areas.

  • Washing the top of the car.

  • Decorating my home, especially Christmas decorations.

  • Clearing outdoor vegetation.

  • Hanging and putting away bird feeders.

Who knew the inability to safely climb a ladder could be so limiting?

Having to find someone to do a simple chore is a challenge. It is not just the cost, but the availability of help.

My friend and I got the light bulbs changed, after many failed attempts and discussions of the right light bulbs to use.

There are too many instances of home accidents as a result of ladders. I was talking with my neighbor a few days ago, and watched my next-door neighbor fall from his ladder. He missed the bottom step and down he went. He only hurt his dignity, but it could’ve been much worse.

I can’t take the risk anymore.

It pisses me off, but I guess I won’t call on the neighbor for help.

Let me know how ladders are impacting your daily life. I care.

Sincerely,

Lynn Brooke
